Description

A well or shallow borehole to water the garden or fill a tank? The Flocea 3″ 300 W solar submersible pump is the ideal entry-level pump for water less than about twenty metres down. It fits boreholes from 100 mm in diameter and pushes water up from the bottom. A single photovoltaic panel of about 500 Wp powers its MPPT controller, which drives the pump with the sun and protects it against dry running.

From €389 incl. VAT with the original 2 m cable: stainless steel pump, MPPT controller and dry-run protection included. 4 mm² cable from 10 to 100 m to choose. Solar panels not included. Indicative lead time: 3 to 4 weeks. 4.5 m³/h and 35 m are two separate maximums: read the real flow on the curve.

What is it for?

Garden watering

Water a vegetable garden or flower beds from a well or shallow borehole, with no power line.

Tank filling

Fill a tank during the day and use the water whenever you want.

Small pond and trough

Feed a small pond or a trough with a single solar panel.

What makes the difference

MPPT controller included

It gets the best from the panel between 30–48 V and starts the pump as soon as there is enough sunlight.

Dry-run protection

Built into the controller: the pump stops if the borehole level drops too far, with no extra probe.

Cable at the right length

Order the 4 mm² cable that matches the depth of your borehole, with bare copper ends for the controller terminals.

What flow at your depth?

A submersible pump pushes water upwards: the greater the total dynamic head (TDH), the lower the flow. TDH = H1 + H2 + 10% × L, where H1 is the depth of the water level while pumping, H2 the height of the outlet above ground and L the total pipe length.

Diagram for calculating the total head of a borehole pump

Example: water 8 m below ground while pumping, outlet 1 m above ground, 30 m of pipe: TDH ≈ 8 + 1 + 3 ≈ 12 m. The pump then delivers about 3 m³/h in full sun.

Head Indicative flow
5 m ≈ 4 m³/h
10 m ≈ 3.3 m³/h
15 m ≈ 2.5 m³/h
20 m ≈ 1.5 m³/h
25 m ≈ 0.9 m³/h

How many solar panels?

The controller of this 24 V pump works between 30 and 48 V and accepts no more than 60 V open circuit. A single panel of about 400 to 550 Wp is enough. Check these values on its label:

Power (Pmax) 400 to 550 Wp
Maximum power voltage (Vmp) 34 to 44 V
Open-circuit voltage (Voc) 52 V maximum (≈ 57 V at −20 °C, below the 60 V limit)
Short-circuit current (Isc) 18 A maximum
Do not connect two panels in series to this pump: their open-circuit voltage would exceed 60 V and damage the controller.

Which cable length should I choose?

The pump comes with 2 m of original cable. Choose the total length: installation depth of the pump + distance to the controller + 1 to 2 m of margin, rounded up to the next ten. The supplied cable is 4 mm² whatever the length, sized to limit losses up to 100 m.

A 4 mm² cable for every length

The minimum cross-section is 2 mm² up to 30 m, 2.5 mm² up to 50 m and 4 mm² up to 100 m between the controller and the pump. The supplied cable is 4 mm² whatever the length you choose.

Maximum length Minimum cross-section
≤ 30 m 2 mm²
≤ 50 m 2.5 mm²
≤ 100 m 4 mm²

Installation in 5 steps

  1. Check the inner diameter of the borehole (100 mm minimum), its depth and the pumping water level given by the driller.
  2. Connect the delivery pipe to the 1¼″ outlet and hang the pump from a stainless steel rope, never from the cable or the pipe.
  3. Lower the pump at least 1 to 2 m below the lowest water level, without resting it on the bottom of the borehole.
  4. Mount the controller in the shade near the borehole head, then connect the pump and the panel with a DC breaker.
  5. Switch on in the sun and check the flow; store the water in a tank to use it at any time.

Frequently asked questions

What borehole diameter is needed?

The pump is 3 inches, about 76 mm. A borehole with an inner diameter of at least 100 mm is recommended so that the pump, cable and pipe pass without rubbing.

How much water per day?

It depends on the head and on sunlight. For example, at 15 m head the pump delivers about 2.5 m³/h in full sun. Store the water in a tank to use it whenever you want.

Do I need a battery?

No. The pump runs with the sun and stops at night: storing water is simpler and cheaper than storing electricity.

Is the pump protected if the borehole runs dry?

Yes. Dry-run protection is built into the controller: the pump stops if the water level drops too low.

Are the panels included?

No. Plan one panel of about 400 to 550 Wp: Vmp 34–44 V, Voc ≤ 52 V, Isc ≤ 18 A.

What is the cross-section of the supplied cable?

4 mm², whatever the length, sized to limit losses up to 100 m between the controller and the pump.

What is the lead time?

Allow 3 to 4 weeks after your order, depending on the cable length chosen.
