Solar Surface Pumps

Installed dry beside the water source, a solar surface pump draws water from a tank, pond, river or shallow well and delivers it to your irrigation system or storage. Powered by solar panels, it runs without any mains connection.

Solar surface pump: which installations is it for?

A solar surface pump sits out of the water, close to the source. It draws water through a suction hose placed in the reservoir, then pushes it to where it is needed. A solar controller drives the motor using the energy from the photovoltaic panels: the pump delivers more water in strong sunshine and stops at night. To have water available at any time, store water rather than electricity, for example in a flexible water tank.

  • Irrigation: vegetable garden, orchard, drip or sprinkler irrigation from a reservoir, pond or stream.
  • Water transfer: filling a tank, a cistern or an elevated reservoir.
  • Livestock watering: supplying a trough in a field, far from any power outlet.
  • Pressure boosting: some models raise the pressure of a small water network.

The limit to know: 7 to 8 m of suction

A surface pump sucks water up: the height between the water level during pumping and the pump must not exceed 7 to 8 m, whatever the motor power. For a borehole or a deeper well, choose a solar submersible pump, which pushes water up from the bottom. For pool filtration, see our solar pool pumps.

How to choose the right model

The models in this range have rated maximum flows of roughly 2 to 25 m³/h. Maximum flow and maximum head are never reached at the same time: compare models at your own operating point.

  • Useful flow: daily water volume ÷ hours of good sunshine.
  • Total dynamic head (TDH): height difference between the water and the highest point, plus friction losses in the pipes. The head calculation method is explained in the solar water pump guide.
  • Voltage and panels: the pump voltage sets the number and wiring of the solar panels, sold separately.
  • Pipes and distance: a small diameter or a long pipe run increases friction losses.
