Three farm applications, three different specifications

A 30 m³ tank for irrigation water and a 30 m³ tank for slurry do not use the same membrane or the same fittings. The stored liquid drives the specification — tell us what it is at first enquiry.

Irrigation and livestock water: seasonal reserve for arable, horticulture or stock. Secures supply through abstraction restrictions and dry spells. Typical capacities: 10 to 100 m³.
Slurry and digestate: dedicated membrane resistant to chemical attack and to fermentation gases, for slurry, dirty water and digestate.
Liquid fertiliser: nitrogen solutions and liquid feeds, stored on farm rather than bought at short notice mid-season.

Slurry storage: the regulatory position

Slurry storage in the UK is regulated, and the required capacity is set by rules — not by preference. In England the relevant framework is the Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil (SSAFO) Regulations together with the Farming Rules for Water; holdings in a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone must additionally meet the storage period set for their sector. The Environment Agency remains the deciding authority on siting, capacity and notification. Equivalent rules apply in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Establish the storage period your holding must achieve before sizing the tank — that requirement, not a commercial estimate, sets the volume.

For irrigation, work from daily demand and the number of days of autonomy you need. For slurry, the volume follows from the storage period required and from the closed periods when spreading is not permitted.

Installation on the holding

The tank sits on a level, compacted area cleared of stones, roots and sharp objects, sized for its full footprint when charged. A geotextile protection mat is recommended. Plan tanker or tractor access for filling and emptying, and keep fittings reachable for inspection.

For slurry, also confirm the minimum separation distances from dwellings, watercourses and boreholes that apply to your holding.

Frequently asked questions

Can the same tank hold water first and slurry later?

No. Membrane and fittings are specified for the liquid. A tank supplied for irrigation water must not be repurposed for slurry, and the reverse is equally true. Confirm the intended use before ordering.

How long does an agricultural pillow tank last?

Estimated service life is 20 to 25 years in normal use, on a properly prepared base and with fittings protected. The manufacturer’s warranty is 5 years.

Will the tank withstand frost and heat?

The membrane is UV-stabilised and rated from −30 °C to +70 °C. Where hard frosts are prolonged, valves and draw-off lines should be lagged or protected.

Can I connect a pump or an irrigation reel?

Yes. Draw-off valve diameter governs the flow rate available. Tell us the flow and pressure you need and we will specify the fittings and pump accordingly.
