Store on farm instead of buying mid-season

Liquid fertiliser prices move considerably through the year. Having your own capacity lets you buy out of season and apply at the agronomically right moment — rather than when the lorry happens to arrive.

A flexible tank provides that capacity without the groundworks and lead time of a rigid store, and can be removed if the holding changes.

The regulatory position

Liquid fertiliser storage is regulated. In England the relevant framework includes the Farming Rules for Water and, for storage installations, the requirements on secondary containment and pollution prevention enforced by the Environment Agency. Holdings in a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone face additional record-keeping and storage obligations. Equivalent rules apply in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Confirm the obligations that apply before sizing the tank.

What to establish

  • The exact product and, where held, its safety data sheet — this determines the membrane
  • Usable volume and expected storage duration
  • Bearing area, and existing or planned secondary containment
  • Fill and draw-off couplings, and compatibility with your application equipment

Frequently asked questions

Is it the same membrane as for irrigation water?

No. Liquid fertiliser requires a dedicated, chemically resistant membrane. State the product before ordering.

Will it cope with temperature swings?

The membrane is rated for a wide temperature range. Where frost is prolonged, protect the valves and draw-off pipework.
