Rainwater Harvesting Pillow Tanks

Flocea manufactures rainwater harvesting pillow tanks in France, from 1 m³ to 500 m³, in PVC-coated reinforced polyester fabric with UV-stabilised treatment. The membrane is closed and fully opaque, so no light gets in: no algal growth, and rainwater that stays clear all year for irrigation, washdown or WC and washing-machine supply. Every tank is assembled in our French workshop and carries a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty, for an estimated service life of 20 to 25 years.

  • 1–500 m³ — capacity range
  • UV-stabilised — treated opaque membrane
  • No foundations — installed in a few hours
  • 5 years — manufacturer’s warranty

What will you use the harvested rainwater for?

  • Agriculture and irrigation: store rainwater for crop irrigation, livestock watering or filling sprayers. Typical capacities: 30 to 500 m³, to secure supply through hosepipe bans and dry spells.
  • Home and garden: watering the vegetable garden, washdown, WC and washing-machine supply. Installed under a terrace or in a crawl space, the tank stays out of sight. Capacities: 1 to 15 m³.
  • Local authorities and industry: watering green spaces, street cleaning, process water or temporary attenuation storage. For everyday volumes, a pillow tank needs no planning consent.

How does a rainwater harvesting pillow tank work?

  1. Collection — gutter water is routed to the tank through a collector. A leaf filter traps debris upstream.
  2. Storage — water is held away from light inside the opaque membrane: no algae, no evaporation, water that stays sound for months.
  3. Use — gravity draw-off valve or a surface pump to pressurise the supply for irrigation, washdown or WC flushing.

Frequently asked questions about rainwater tanks

What size pillow tank do I need for rainwater harvesting?

Volume depends on roof area, local rainfall and intended use. As a rule of thumb: 5 to 15 m³ for a house, 20 to 50 m³ for a working farm, 100 m³ and above for an irrigation reserve or a local authority. Send us your roof area and your requirement and we will size the tank with you.

Does rainwater stay clean in a pillow tank?

Yes. The membrane is completely opaque and closed, so no light enters and algae cannot develop. Combined with an upstream filter, harvested rainwater stays clear for several months. For indoor non-potable use, an additional filtration kit is recommended.

Do I need planning permission for a rainwater pillow tank?

For everyday volumes installed above ground, no consent is normally required — a pillow tank is not a structure. A level, stabilised area with a geotextile underlay is enough. Above certain volumes, or for a buried installation, check with your local planning authority. Where the harvested water feeds an indoor system, design and installation are covered by BS 8515, the British standard for rainwater harvesting systems.

How much does a 10,000-litre rainwater pillow tank cost?

From €1,100 excluding VAT for a 10 m³ (10,000-litre) tank, excluding accessories and installation. Price varies with the equipment specified — filter, valve, pumping kit. Request a free quotation.
