The regulations set the volume, not the catalogue

Slurry storage is regulated and the capacity you must achieve depends on stock numbers, land available for spreading and the closed periods when spreading is not permitted. In England the framework is the Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil (SSAFO) Regulations together with the Farming Rules for Water; holdings in a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone must meet the storage period set for their sector. The Environment Agency decides on siting, capacity and notification. Equivalent rules apply in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Establish the required storage period before sizing. An undersized store solves nothing — it forces spreading in a closed period.

Why a pillow tank rather than a concrete store

  • No civil engineering: a level, stabilised area and a geotextile mat. Commissioned in a day.
  • Lower capital cost than a concrete store of equivalent capacity.
  • Sealed: a continuous welded membrane with no joint to fail, protecting soil and groundwater.
  • Closed cover: limits odour and stops rainfall adding to the volume you have to handle.
  • Reversible: emptied and folded, the tank can be removed or relocated.

Capacities

Capacity Holding profile Points to check
10 to 25 m³ Small livestock unit, intermediate storage Tanker access, emptying frequency
30 to 100 m³ Mid-sized holding, regulatory capacity Required storage period, bearing area
150 to 500 m³ Large holding, anaerobic digestion unit Separation distances, site survey

Siting

A level, compacted area cleared of stones and sharp objects, sized for the full footprint when charged, with a geotextile mat. Plan tanker or tractor access for filling and emptying, and keep fittings reachable.

Confirm the minimum separation distances from dwellings, watercourses, boreholes and abstraction points that apply to your holding.

Frequently asked questions

Will the membrane stand up to slurry?

Yes, provided it is the dedicated slurry membrane. It is not the same specification as an irrigation tank: it resists chemical attack and fermentation gases. State the liquid before ordering.

Is odour controlled?

The tank is closed, which substantially reduces emissions compared with an open store, and prevents rainfall adding to the stored volume.

Can it be emptied with a slurry tanker?

Yes. Draw-off connection size governs the rate — tell us the equipment you use and we will specify the fittings accordingly.
