Steel or flexible: how to choose
Both store the same water, but they answer different constraints.
| Galvanised steel tank | Pillow tank | |
|---|---|---|
| Choose it when | Exposure to impact or vandalism, permanent installation, limited ground area | Plenty of ground available, temporary or relocatable need, tighter budget |
| Assembly | Panel-built on a prepared base | Unfolded on a level area with geotextile |
| Footprint | Vertical: more height, less ground | Horizontal: low profile, more ground |
| Service life | Long, with minimal maintenance | 20–25 years depending on conditions |
Why galvanised steel
- Mechanical strength: withstands impact, nearby machinery movement and vandalism.
- Corrosion protection: galvanising protects the steel through prolonged outdoor exposure.
- Above-ground installation: no excavation; the base is designed for the loaded weight.
- Versatility: irrigation water, rainwater harvesting, static fire-water reserve.
Where the stored water is intended for human consumption, the internal lining and fittings must meet the minimum hygiene requirements of Directive (EU) 2020/2184. Confirm this before ordering.
Points to settle before ordering
- Ground bearing capacity and base design
- Access for delivery of panels and for assembly
- Position of inlet, outlet and overflow
- Wind exposure where the tank is tall and unsheltered
Frequently asked questions
Can it stay outdoors all year?
Yes. Galvanising is intended for outdoor exposure. Where frost is prolonged, protect the fittings and draw-off pipework.
What maintenance does it need?
An annual visual inspection of the lining, fittings and overflow. There are no moving parts and no filtration to service.
Does it need a concrete base?
Yes — unlike a pillow tank. The base must be sized for the fully loaded weight; we provide the required dimensions with the quotation.
