Potable duty is a different tank, not the same one relabelled

A tank for drinking water is not an irrigation tank pressed into service. The membrane, the fittings and the cleaning and commissioning procedure all differ. The reference framework is European: Directive (EU) 2020/2184 sets, in Article 11, the minimum hygiene requirements for materials in contact with water intended for human consumption.

A tank supplied for non-potable duty cannot be repurposed for drinking water. State the intended use at first enquiry — it governs the whole specification.

Professional applications

  • Construction sites and welfare units: temporary potable supply where no mains connection reaches.
  • Local authorities: seasonal reinforcement, or substitution during a burst or mains works.
  • Emergency and humanitarian response: rapid deployment, transported folded, commissioned within hours.
  • Farms and remote properties: domestic reserve where the source is intermittent.
  • Events: temporary drinking water on sites with no supply.

The range by capacity

Capacity Typical use Points to check
1,000 to 10,000 L Welfare unit, remote dwelling, event Access for filling, bearing area
10,000 to 50,000 L Construction site, small authority, farm Refill frequency, draw-off point
Over 50,000 L Municipal reinforcement, emergency, major site Site survey and connection design

Installation and maintenance

  • Level, stabilised area cleared of stones, roots and sharp objects, with a geotextile mat.
  • Filling, draw-off and overflow specified for the duty; fittings kept accessible for inspection.
  • Clean and disinfect before first commissioning and after any prolonged period out of use.
  • Closed opaque membrane: no light, no algal growth, water shielded from external contamination.

Frequently asked questions

Can the stored water be drunk directly?

The tank preserves the quality of the water put into it; it does not treat it. If the incoming water is potable and the tank has been properly cleaned and commissioned, it stays fit for use. Where the source is uncertain, treatment must be provided upstream.

How long does the water keep?

That depends on temperature, initial quality and residual disinfection. The opaque membrane removes the light factor, which is the main driver of biological growth. For extended storage, agree a monitoring regime with whoever is responsible for water quality on the project.

Can an irrigation tank be reused for drinking water?

No. Membrane and fittings are specified for the duty. Repurposing is not provided for and would not support any claim of suitability for contact with water intended for human consumption.
