Why filter upstream rather than downstream
A filter fitted after the tank treats water that already carries sediment: it blinds sooner and does nothing to stop sludge collecting in the base. Fitted upstream, it traps debris while it is still easy to remove.

Does the filter make the water potable?
No. It traps debris and particles; it removes neither micro-organisms nor dissolved substances. Indoor non-potable use calls for additional treatment.

It depends on surrounding vegetation. In autumn leaf fall the interval shortens considerably. Plan the access at installation stage.
