How it works
Water passes through a chamber where a UV-C lamp emits at 253.7 nm. The dose received — intensity multiplied by exposure time — determines effectiveness. That makes flow rate the critical parameter: above the rated flow, water passes too quickly and disinfection is no longer assured.
Strengths and limits
- Immediate disinfection, with no chemical residual and no change to taste
- No disinfection by-products
- But no residual effect: water is not protected downstream of the unit
- And sensitive to turbidity: suspended particles shield micro-organisms from the light
Hence the practical rule: a UV steriliser goes after appropriate filtration, never before it.

- Actual peak flow at the point of installation — not the average flow
- Turbidity and UV transmittance of the water to be treated
- Filtration already installed upstream
- Intended use of the treated water and the rules that apply to it
Frequently asked questions
Does UV make water potable?
Not on its own. UV inactivates micro-organisms but removes neither metals, nitrates nor dissolved organic matter. For water intended for human consumption, the treatment must be designed as a whole and materials in contact must meet the requirements of Directive (EU) 2020/2184.
How often is the lamp replaced?
UV-C lamps lose output long before they stop lighting: they keep glowing while the dose has already fallen short. Replacement is scheduled on running hours, to the manufacturer’s figure — not when the lamp finally fails.
